The dramatic story of the patron saint of Minnesota's capital city, Saint Paul, was the first of Mendelssohn's oratorios. Completed in 1835, it was patterned after the passions of J.S. Bach, whose music Mendelssohn had championed. Its three principal themes are the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, the conversion of Saul to Paul, and the apostle's subsequent career. Now rarely performed, this monumental masterwork was one of the most popular pieces of the 19th century.

Then spake Sir Launcelot . . . and I shall send a messenger unto my lord Arthur, a treaty for to take; for better is peace than always war
Le Morte d'Arthur, Sir Thomas Malory (1485)
In observance of Veterans Day 2017, OSM presents a program dedicated to the universal longing for world peace. Joining the OSM chorus and orchestra will be the Prior Lake High School Concert Choir as part of OSM's Viva Coro! youth engagement program.
THE ARMED MAN: A Mass for Peace recently celebrated a remarkable 2000 performances worldwide, confirming its status as the most frequently programmed new classical work for choir and orchestra of recent decades. It is a powerful and compelling account of the descent into, and terrible consequences of, war. Dedicated to the victims of the Kosovo crisis, this work is a contemporary example of a mass based on the 15th century French song L'homme armé (The Armed Man). Although set within the framework of the Christian mass, only four of its thirteen movements are traditional Mass elements. The composer uses additional texts from the Qur'an, the Psalms, the Mahàbhàrata, Rudyard Kipling, and Lord Tennyson. This is a major choral work which recognizes what the preamble to the United Nations Charter calls "the scourge of war" as a universal tragedy.
THE PEACEMAKERS (selections), premiered in 2012, the work sets words of peace from iconic, world-changing figures such as Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King, along with other inspirational quotations of Mother Teresa, Albert Schweitzer, Anne Frank and the Dalai Lama. One line from the Persian mystic poet Rumi sums up the ethos of the work: All religions, all singing one song: Peace be with you.
KARL JENKINS A recent survey shows that Welsh born composer Karl Jenkins is now the most performed living composer in the world. His recorded output has resulted in 17 gold and platinum discs, while his The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace has received over 2000 performances worldwide since its premiere in 2000. Jenkins' music, drawn from rock, jazz and classical forms, transcends traditional boundaries, from the global crossover phenomenon Adiemus to his hugely popular settings of Requiem and Stabat Mater.

This generation of Americans has a rendezvous with destiny.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt
OSM has partnered with librettist Dan Kehde and composer Roger Ames with Elizabeth Bassine to create THE GREATEST GENERATION – An American Oratorio.
This uniquely "American" oratorio tells the story of a soldier and his family during the years of the Second World War through the music that sustained the country during this pivotal time in American and world history – music that includes some of the greatest songs of love and war ever written.
This work is not about the usual icons of war. It is not about fronts, or "taking the hill" or even danger of the kind we usually attribute to the battlefield. It is about love and loss, and worry and trying to connect over thousands of miles. It is about children who miss their fathers, and adolescents who fall in love. It is about young boys becoming men, choosing to follow their own fathers into war —and, especially, about the heartsickness and worry suffered by those left behind. It is about the wives and daughters who wish to protect and help in any way possible. But mostly, it is about hope — hope that life somehow will come back to normal, that fealty will be rewarded, that prayers will be answered.
This is the story of the heroism of families of servicemen and women back then as well as of all the heroes in bases and barracks and bivouacs and homes all-across the world who continue to make those sacrifices for our country.

The Oratorio Society of Minnesota is proud to join the worldwide celebration of the 100th birthday of Leonard Bernstein, the composer, the conductor, educator, musician, cultural ambassador, and humanitarian.
Leonard Bernstein – celebrated as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th century – ushered in an era of major cultural and technological transition. He led the way in advocating an open attitude about what constituted "good" music, actively bridging the gap between classical music, Broadway musicals, jazz, and rock, and he seized new media for its potential to reach diverse communities of listeners, young and old. Longtime conductor of the New York Philharmonic, renowned composer of works for the concert hall and Broadway stage, glamorous television personality, virtuosic pianist, and committed educator, Bernstein was a multi-tasker long before the term was coined. Bernstein–or "Lenny," as he was often affectionately called–was an extravagantly gifted musician with a common touch. He maintained a life-long focus on advocating for social justice, notably civil rights at home and peace around the world.
Join us for this birthday celebration featuring both classical and theatrical music by one of America's most loved composers.
Tickets: $30 preferred, $20 adults, $15 students
