Latvian Socks

Latvian Socks

These finely-crafted Latvian men’s socks hand-knitted from new wool, using traditional pattern and colors, were purchased in the 1990s in Riga from a traditional knitter. Some or all of the dyes are probably derived from plants. Knitters typically dyed their own yarns and improvised their own patterns. The socks would be part of a traditional men’s outfit, which in most parts of Latvia would have been gray woolen homespun trousers and a gray homespun jacket with some embroidery in black on the cuffs and the lapels. Often, the footwear was pastalas (a type of simple leather moccasin) and white socks with a colored pattern on the cuff, which went over the bottom of the pant legs. Value: $25
